(Eleuthera, Bahamas) – Approval has been granted by Government for the development of a Stone Crab processing facility by a local businessman on BAIC property in Hatchet Bay, Deputy Chairman of the Bahamas Agricultural and Industrial Corporation (BAIC), Mr. Clay Sweeting confirmed on Wednesday August 7th. According to Sweeting, the intention of the facility, being developed by Mr. John Cartwright of Gregory Town, Eleuthera, is to process locally caught stocks for export and expectations are that the processing facility should be up and running in time for the opening of the season on October 15th, 2013, pending final export license approvals.

Additionally a group of Bahamian investors accompanied by Surveyors and Property Managers from BAIC made a special trip to Hatchet Bay on Thursday, August 1st to tour available properties for investment. The Deputy Chairman indicated that interest has been shown in various farming activities, including a Coconut Farm, and a Chicken Farm, for which initial surveying was also done during the trip.

Mr. Sweeting also announced the Bahamas government’s recent donation commitment of a mammography machine received from the US government.  The machine, according to Sweeting, is intended to be placed within a facility on the island of Eleuthera, centrally located to be accessible by the wider public.  He added,”We are working to improve the life of people in Eleuthera to take away the hassle of traveling into Nassau.”  Information on the exact location and arrival timing is not yet available said, Mr. Sweeting, as they are still in the early stages of the negotiation.
