Eleuthera, Bahamas – One Eleuthera Foundation and Susan G. Komen’s Breast Cancer Outreach Program (BCOP) manned an informational booth at Susan G. Komen Bahamas Race for the Cure on January 14th, 2017. Community Outreach Assistant, Shapreka Clarke (bottom left) and Administrator for Cancer Society Eleuthera, Chinnici McDonald, travelled to Nassau for the event.
Komen Bahamas Race for the Cure is hosted every year in Nassau to celebrate survivors, to honor those who have lost their battle, and to raise awareness and funds for the fight against breast cancer. The event catered to well over 1000 participants and nearly 200 breast cancer survivors were honored.
The event included booths in the “Race Village”, participation in a 5K run/walk, and a ceremony that highlighted breast cancer survivors and awarded run/walk first, second and third place winners.
A heart tugging moment during the ceremony came from a 24-year-old breast cancer survivor. Zitalia Fox told her story about being diagnosed with stage 3 breast cancer and her decision to have a double mastectomy. Zitalia’s strength and bravery was truly inspiring.
“This was a great opportunity to share information about the Breast Cancer Outreach Program and our impact on Eleuthera. At the event we were able to network and make connections with other organizations present. I truly enjoyed the event and hope to return again”, said Community Outreach Assistant Shapreka.
BCOP began in 2013 and was funded on a year to year basis by Susan G Komen. Through the renewal of a grant from the same organization in 2016, One Eleuthera Foundation is able to continue its effort in educating women on Eleuthera about breast cancer and has expanded its reach to Cat Island, Exuma and Long Island.
