Ride for Hope, continues to put the proceeds of its annual fund raising efforts to tremendous work here in Eleuthera. Since May 16, 2009 the organization has sponsored several groups of women from Eleuthera to Nassau as part of its Family Island Mammogram Screening (FIMS) initiative. The efforts in Eleuthera are done through the local branch of The Cancer Society who has worked diligently in recent months to make the women of Eleuthera aware of issues surrounding Breast Cancer. According to officials in Eleuthera, the aim is to reach as many women as possible in this early detection initiative with the aim being a consistent biweekly group transport.

The latest effort sponsored by Ride for Hope, occurred on Saturday August 29, when a group of 19 at-risk women from Eleuthera flew to Nassau for a screening at Doctor’s Hospital. Discounted travel was provided by GHL Travel Agency and Southern Air while Dr. Carroll and his Radiology department came in on their day off to conduct the screening. Doctor’s Hospital gave discounted screening rates. This initiative is a cost effective way to create awareness and reduce the risk of late-stage diagnoses for Family Island women. Ride for Hope is underwriting all costs. The Cancer Society, through its local chapters, finds candidates for screening and handles all logistics and coordination involved in transportation to Nassau.
