(Eleuthera, Bahamas)  –  Bahamas Power and Light (former BEC) is struggling to restore power to most of Eleuthera, after settlements from Savannah Sound to Harbour Island, excluding Spanish Wells, were plunged into darkness sometime after 8pm on Monday, July 25th, 2016.

In initial communication with the company shortly after the outage began, customers were told that there was a minor problem at the Hatchet Bay plant, however, well into the third hour (at press time) of darkness all indications are now that the problem is more challenging than expected.

One closely placed source said at about 11pm that the wait for restoration could be a long one – without giving any more specific details.

The night’s outage came on the same day that the island experienced a very similar problem, during the mid-morning, which had been blamed on an engine failure in Rock Sound.

These outages come on the heels of a planned visit to the island by CEO of BPL, Pamela Hill on Tuesday, July 26th, 2016.
