Eleuthera, Bahamas (By Race Staff in Gregory Town) – Competitors took to the newly configured Pineappleman Sprint Triathlon course with vigor Saturday morning June 4. Simon Lowe, 33, of New Providence added to his 2011 and 2014 titles finishing the 500 meter swim, 15-kilometer cycle and 5-kilometer run in 1 hour, 2 minutes, 48 seconds. Sarah Kennedy, a first-time champion in the women’s division, was not far behind, coming in at just under 1 hour, 7 minutes, and fourth overall.

“It’s the hardest course on the Bahamas tri calendar but the most scenic,” said Kennedy via Facebook message. “Favorite part of the new course was definitely the downhills.”

Cyclists tackled one of Eleuthera’s steepest hills just north of Gregory Town and runners dealt with numerous climbs north and south of the Glass Window Bridge, before finishing at Daddy Joe’s Bar and Restaurant. Lowe, who went off course briefly on the cycle route, agreed the run was tougher.

“My run was pretty slow as I hadn’t run for two months prior to the race,” said Lowe who also cycled the 100-mile Tour de Lootra last month.  “I had a crash in Nassau where a dog ran out in front of me on the bike and I pulled a load of muscles in my leg which prevented me from running.”

More than 60 competitors vied for great prizes at the new race site – Daddy Joe’s – 1 mile south of the Glass Window Bridge. The event was part of the annual Pineapple Festival, also held at a new site this year. A hotly contested 5-kilometer run, saw visiting Richard Behm edge Jason Simpson by 16 seconds, both men posting impressive times on the hilly road. The junior 400-meter run saw the Zion Children’s Home Calvin Mason, 9, take the top prize of lunch for 2 at Laughing Lizard Café. Yvann Roy took the junior Aquathlon title, finishing the swim-run course ahead of his siblings.

Liz Heiberg was chased to the line in the 5k walk by last year’s champion Alicia Munroe and Dr. Kim Scriven. Heiberg added the crown to her second place finish in last month’s Catch Jerry Chile 5 mile walk. Island Made Gift Shop, The Cove, Pineapple Fields, Ocean Tally, Think Simple, Sands Beer, Daddy Joe’s and Rainbow Inn presented the annual event.

The event raised almost $1,000 for the Zion Children’s Home of Current Island.
