The Member of Parliament for Central and South Eleuthera, Mr. Damian Gomez, has confirmed his resignation from his Cabinet post as Minister of State for Legal Affairs, in the Office of The Attorney General. Mr. Gomez in a brief message said that he had resigned to address personal matters and that he will continue to support the Prime Minister and the Government.

Much has changed since his optimistic pre-election interview in 2011 when prospective candidate, Mr. Gomez, in part, had this to say about why Eleutherans should elect him:

“One of the things which Eleuthera has got to consider going into this election is whether they want an MP who is just a back bencher or an MP who is in the Cabinet.  Now if you have an MP who is in the cabinet, as a Minister of government, there are no Ministerial headquarters currently in Eleuthera, so that person is going to have to live in New Providence.  The question is whether we are able to provide a party structure on the island which enables that MP to function properly as both MP and as Minister.  I intend to put that structure in place, and what it means for generals in the PLP is that they will have greater prominence in their communities, because they will be real point people who are then able to say to me, this is my considered view.  Now if I’m living here, I’m less likely to take that view into account than if I’m saying this is where I have you in my organization.  So there is a benefit to supporting my candidacy, because it is very likely that the PLP will win, and if we win, it is very likely that I will be in the Cabinet.”
