The Department of Immigration in partnership with the Royal Bahamas Police Force are conducting an active search on island currently for illegal immigrants who its is believed landed in Bannerman Town. According to authorities, reports were received around 6am on Wednesday morning, October 28th, 2015, that a suspected Haitian sloop had landed near Bannerman Town.
Checks of the area were made with no results by early afternoon on Wednesday. Tracks were found in the suspected landing area, and it was reported that a loaded truck had been seen leaving the area.
Authorities continued searches through the evening on Wednesday, and by midnight up to 35 illegal immigrants had been apprehended between the settlements of Bannerman Town and Wemyss Bight. Officer In Charge (OIC) with the Department of Immigration for the Eleuthera District, Mrs. Shema Darling, confirmed on Wednesday evening that the group of immigrants in custody, would be transferred to New Providence on Thursday morning, October 29th, 2015.
