(Harbour Island, Eleuthera, Bahamas) – A fire at the BEC Plant in Harbour Island caused a blackout on the island, on Wednesday evening. According to authorities, sometime around 7:30pm on Wednesday 15th July 2015 a concerned resident contacted the Harbour Island police station and informed Cpl 3312 Roxbury of a structural fire at the BEC power plant. As a result members of the volunteer fire department  were contacted. They visited the scene where they discovered a white 40ft container engulfed in flames. On the inside of the trailer was a temporary supply generator which is used as the primary source of power to the island. The fire was extinguished a short time later and as a result of the damages sustained the island was launched into complete darkness for several hours.

Power was restored fully around the island by about 10pm according to authorities. Police say, investigations into this matter continue.
