The Bahamasair plane sitting safely at the airport in Rock Sound after the incident.
According to witness accounts, on Thursday morning, June 5th, Bahamasair’s flight 376, which reportedly took off normally at around 6:35am with a full load of approximately 50 passengers, destined for Rock Sound, Eleuthera then on to Governor’s Harbour, caught fire in one of the engines.
Alma Mingo, a passenger on the flight, described seeing fire on one of the wings about 10 to 15 minutes into the flight, and said that all they could see were clouds. Mrs. Mingo, whose final destination was Governor’s Harbour said that passengers on board were frightened with some screaming at the sight. However, she described the remainder of the flight into Rock Sound as stable, saying that the captain reportedly cut off the affected engine, and executed a safe landing on the airport in south Eleuthera on one engine only. She and other passengers for Governor’s Harbour were bussed from Rock Sound to their final destination.
Officials report that the incident occurred about 5 – 7 minutes before landing, during the descent into Rock Sound.
