The 2014 season of the Eleuthera Junior Baseball League (EJBL) opened on Saturday with a ceremony and games at the Rock Sound Primary School Park.   The games got started at 11:00am in the Coach Pitch Division with the Spanish Well Hook n’ Jooks (defending champions) defeating the Rock Sound Coco Plums 24 to 12.  It was followed by an opening ceremony at 1:00pm.

Participating teams made a grand entrance to the park accompanied by the Preston Albury High School marching band under the leadership of Michelle Kemp. Craig Kemp – President of the Bahamas Baseball Federation gave remarks. Also in attendance at the opening was Mr. George Sweeting of Spanish Wells who has been involved with little league baseball for many years, with training abroad in the field under his belt.  According to EJBL President, Larry Forbes, the opening day was held in honour of Past President of the EJBL, Michael Dorsette, and Former Softball Player, Eddie McSweeney.  Many other dignitaries who were on the programme did not make it to the ceremony as it clashed with a large funeral service further north in Governor’s Harbour.

The second game on the day, a minor division game, got started at 2:30pm. It was a keenly contested affair with the Rock Sound Marlins defeating the Spanish Wells Divers (defending champions) 9 to 8.  For Rock Sound, Dillon Ingraham was the winning pitcher and Cranston Curry went 2 for 3 while for Spanish Wells, Payden Newbold was tagged with the loss and Karter and Zack Roberts both were 2 for 3. Play continues next weekend in Spanish Wells.

Participating teams this season are:

·       From Rock Sound – Coach Pitch, Minor & Junior Divisions

·       From Spanish Wells – Coach Pitch, Minor & Junior Divisions

·       From Tarpum Bay – Coach Pitch & Junior Divisions

·       From Green Castle – Minor Division

·       From Harbour Island – Minor Division

Notable for the 2014 season, as in the 2013 season, there is no participating team from Central Eleuthera for this league which saw about 100 youth participate in the opening march.

Preston H. Albury High School band provided music for the afternoon ceremony.
