(Governor’s Harbour, Eleuthera) On Tuesday, June 4th, 2013 at 6:30pm in Rawson Square, the Independence Secretariat will host a special ceremony for the launch of the Bahamian Flag, which is slated to visit 29 locations throughout the Bahamian archipelago, in the run up to the 40th Anniversary of Independence Day in the Bahamas on July 10th, 2013.

Eleuthera is slated as the 10th stop, says Superintendent Ismella Davis, Officer in Charge of the Eleuthera District, who is also a member of the Central Eleuthera Independence Committee.  She also highlighted that during the island’s Flag Raising ceremony, a large photo of Timothy Gibson (Author of the National Anthem, from Savannah Sound, Eleuthera)  would be raised in a place of honour at the Governor’s Harbour Administrative Complex.

The Central Eleuthera Independence Committee met on Tuesday, May 28th, 2013 to discuss plans for the upcoming 40th Anniversary of Independence celebrations.  Events surrounding Independence Day are planned for Saturday, July 6th and Tuesday July 9th to include an Expo, demonstrations of older Bahamian customs like rock oven bread making, boat making, shoe making (‘whompers’), straw plaiting, bush teas, as well as ‘Ole Time’ games like marbles, hop scotch, top spinning, may pole plaiting and others.

The islands’ talented youth will also be on display with an all-star island youth band slated to perform, and uniformed clubs to take part in a parade.  Local bands will also come together to showcase home grown talent along with junkanoo rushouts showing off rythym, colours and sounds and fireworks displays.

Independence Day, July 10th, 2013 is reserved as a family fun day in each of the respective settlements across The Eleutheras.
