(Eleuthera, Bahamas) – The Royal Bahamas Police Force, Eleuthera District, in a joint leadership role with One Eleuthera Foundation (OEF) and in partnership with several private and public groups, on Thursday, May 02nd, 2013, launched  its road  safety campaign under the theme “Saving Lives – if you see something, say something!”  Supt.  of the District, Ismella Davis promises it will be an aggressive campaign to promote road safety on Eleuthera.

The initiative was launched with the laying of crosses at four of the seven fatal accident sites.

It has been sparked by the recent spate of deadly vehicle accidents on the island, which to-date has resulted in eight people dying, beginning with Mr. Alvin Cash in Hatchet Bay on December  3rd 2012.

During the first four months of 2013,  Eleuthera saw an additional seven lives lost:

  • Walter Boname  in Rainbow Bay on February 3rd.
  • Garfield Sands in Eleuthera Island Shores on February 9th.
  • Lakeisha Rolle and one of her toddler twin sons, Keiron – the infant died in the accident on February 20th in Rock Sound and his mother Lakeisha died in hospital four days later.
  • Dequante Stubbs (previously identified as Dequan Albury) died on April 29th six weeks after an accident in Rainbow Bay on March 16th.
  • Laveaux Bonami  died in an accident in Palmetto Point on April 19th and
  • Roben Etienne (Name believed to be correct but not officially confirmed by police) died in Governor’s Harbour on April 27th

The first site commemorated with a white cross was in Eleuthera Island Shores in memory of Mr. Garfield Sands.

The white crosses with the names of the individuals killed in the traffic accidents were planted at four of the sites on Thursday, to heighten the awareness of the driving public and to affect a change in driving practices, starting with the northern most accident location in Eleuthera Island Shores, just south of Gregory Town, where Mr. Garfield Sands lost his life.   The other three sites planted on Thursday included the accident locations of  Mr. Alvin Cash; Mr. Dequante  Stubbs (also identified as Dequan Albury) and Mr. Walter Boname. The three remaining accident sites in Governor’s Harbour, Palmetto Point and Rock Sound will also be commemorated in the same way as the road safety campaign gets underway.

Organisers and partners in the campaign are calling on drivers to slow down, buckle up, drive sober and to not “text” while driving.

According to OEF,  on Friday, May 3rd, campaign organisers will be issuing road safety paraphernalia and speaking to the general public at the “Fish Fry” in Governor’s Harbour on the importance of adhering to road rules and regulations.

Additionally, activities promoting road safety will continue throughout the month of May with a series of school visits and town meetings; dates, times and locations to be announced.
