Nurse Regina Ingraham demonstrated at the 28th Biennial Conference of Caribbean Nurses’ Organization in Suriname (the Friendly Country) that nurses in the Bahamas have the capacity to develop nursing models of care.
On Wednesday, October 25th 2012 Mrs. Ingraham’s presentation followed Suriname’s Speaker of the House J. Simmons who spoke on “health and politics”, Director of Health, Dr.M.Eersel’s presentation “Health & Ethics” and Dr.J.Shamian International Council of Nurses president candidate’s paper on the Role of Health Professionals in Health System strengthening, a Canadian perspective.
Nurse Ingraham’s topic “Taking Action for Positive Results, Implementing new programs” outlined her personal initiative and program to win the fight against chronic diseases in one junior high and four primary schools in Eleuthera.
Her assessment of the school children revealed high levels of obesity, elevated blood pressures and abnormal BMI’s(body mass index), which are risk factors for developing chronic diseases. These findings were alarming and disturbing and sparked Mrs. Ingraham to implement a six weeks progressive lifestyle changes plan. At the end of the period there were remarkable improvements in the students’ health indices. Nurse Ingraham’s tool demonstrates quality nursing care and improves clients outcomes.
Excellent work Mrs. Regina Ingraham! Continue to uphold your mottto ‘get to the root of the problem before it begins’.
