Cancer is a disease that has touched every family in The Bahamas in one way or the other. We on Eleuthera are no exception. This is compounded by the fact that our economy is depressed, with a large number of persons being unemployment in some areas.
Each day finds us in a struggle to provide hope and resources to those affected by this awful disease.
Our focus and plans remain on assisting families who are dealing with a cancer diagnosis.
The Cancer Society Eleuthera and its partners render financial assistance to many persons who are ill equipped to handle the stress of finding funds to travel into Nassau for doctor visits and various tests. With the help of our biggest ally, The Ride for Hope and many other donors such as the Cotton Bay Foundation and others, we not only focus on education but on assisting with early detection with our free medical clinics organized by our Nassau Branch. We can all agree that cancer is not an easy disease to fight; therefore, we endeavor to offer hope and assistance in whatever way we can.
We are seeking the partnership and support of the general public as we host our Annual Cancer Awareness Walk-a-thon which is scheduled for Saturday, 27th October, 2012 at 6:30 a.m. This event is our main fundraiser for the year and a great opportunity for us to focus on spreading the message of cancer awareness on the island of Eleuthera. We are also planning an island wide T-shirt day for Friday, 26th October, 2012 in conjunction with our walk. We depend on the support of the schools, the business community and the general public (including the government offices) to make this event a success.
This year we expect to double the size of our walk as we expand to include Spanish Wells, Harbour Island and Central and North Eleuthera. Our Walk will be held simultaneously in these areas with a focus on raising awareness and heralding the message that by working together we can, not just treat, but find a cure for this awful disease.
While we realize the size of this task, we however believe with the support of our enthusiastic, hardworking volunteers, we can make this happen! From year to year we have seen significant growth in the participation of the residents of Eleuthera and we call on friends to participate and donate to this worthy cause. We need your support as We Work Together not just for treatment but For a Cure.
T-shirts and Souse Out Tickets are available by calling our office at 332-1804 or 225-6480.
