Cape Eleuthera, The Bahamas (5 June 2012)—The Honorable Jerome Fitzgerald M.P, Minister of Education for the Bahamas, along with his delegation, visited the campuses of the Deep Creek Middle School, the Cape Eleuthera Institute, and The Island School for a tour of the facilities Thursday morning. This marked the first visit by the newly appointed Minister to the campuses. The stop was part of the Minister’s effort to visit each school on the Island and familiarize himself with those interested in promoting greener education and practices.
The Honorable Minister was impressed with efforts made by DCMS as the first green flag school in The Bahamas. He also praised other programs, such as the Bahamas Environmental Steward Scholars (BESS) and their efforts to involve young Bahamians in protection of natural and marine resources. During the visit he also issued a challenge that would see every school on Eleuthera being “green” within the next five years. The tour also included a walk-through of the renewable energy systems on campus, the lab facilities, and the aquaponics and aquaculture systems for growing food within The Bahamas, all prime areas for expanding government partnerships.
Others on the visit included First Assistant Secretary Ralph Bowe, District Superintendent Harcourt Davis, Assistant District Superintendent Kirkwood Cleare, Human Resource Officer Frances Friend, Senior Education Officer Primary School Curriculum Althea Gibson, Senior Administrator for South Eleuthera District Charles King, Chief Councillor for South Eleuthera District Philip McPhee and former principal of Preston Albury High School Robert Deal. Chris Maxey, director of The Island School, spoke with the minister about expanding the ways in which the government and school can work together to further the goals of education in The Bahamas, and thanked the officials for the support they have given The Cape Eleuthera Island School in the form of duty concessions to build infrastructure and remuneration.
