(Governor’s Harbour, Eleuthera) – Michael Bethel, now a seventh grade student at the Windermere High School, was recently honored with a first place prize for his contribution to the National “Say No To Drugs” Motto/Logo Contest held during the 2010/2011 school year while he attended the Governor’s Harbour Primary School in grade six. Two other students were also recognized from the same grade six class, for their second and third place finishes at the school – Ms. Saiydah Bryan and Ms. Sergelyn Richmond respectively.
Director of the Bahamas National Drug Council (BNDC), Dr. Bridgette Rolle was present at the brief ceremony held on Thursday, June 14 at the Parish Hall in Governor’s Harbour to recognize the top awardees’ creative work. Dr. Rolle remarked how pleased she was to be there, and expressed thanks to Michael, Saiydah and Sergelyn, saying that she was, “Blown away by this work from minds so young!” She went on to say, “We are trying our best to save this generation of children… Our job is to prevent you from getting on drugs in the first place…, and to push positive activities.”
The event was hosted by Mr. Jackswell Percentie, local representative of the BNDC, who was accompanied by Mrs. Zoanne Percentie, also of the BNDC, Mrs. Anna Horton, Special Projects Officer with the District Education Office – who also brought congratulatory remarks to the students, Pastor Henry Whyte, Pastor Dwight Cambridge, parents, family and friends, as well as staff and students of the Governor’s Harbour Primary School.
As first place winner at Governor’s Harbour Primary School, Michael was presented with a large poster of his artistic creation, along with other prizes.
According to Dr. Rolle, she had also visited the Spanish Wells All Age School during an earlier trip to recognize top awardee students there.
