ALERT #52 (FINAL ALERT) ON HURRICANE DORIAN ISSUED BY THE BAHAMAS DEPARTMENT OF METEOROLOGY ON WEDNESDAY 4TH SEPTEMBER 2019 AT 6 AM EDT.

…CATASTROPHIC HURRICANE DORIAN HAS FINALLY MOVED OUT OF THE BAHAMAS…

THE TROPICAL STORM WARNING FOR GRAND BAHAMA, ABACO, BIMINI AND THE BERRY ISLANDS IS DISCONTINUED.  THIS MEANS THAT THE ALL CLEAR IS NOW GIVEN FOR THESE ISLANDS.

EVEN THOUGH THE WARNING IS DISCONTINUED, RESIDENTS MUST STILL EXERCISE CAUTION IN MOVING ABOUT AS THERE ARE AREAS IN THE ISLANDS WHERE THERE ARE DOWNED POWER LINES, SEVERE FLOODING, DOWNED TREES AND OTHER DEBRIS ACROSS SOME STREETS.  RESIDENTS ARE ASKED TO AVOID THESE AREAS AS MUCH AS POSSIBLE AND ALLOW MAINTENANCE CREW TO CLEAR THE STREETS AND THE WATERS TO SUBSIDE.

AT 5 AM EDT, THE CENTER OF HURRICANE DORIAN WAS LOCATED NEAR LATITUDE 29.2 DEGREES NORTH AND LONGITUDE 79.5 DEGREES WEST OR ABOUT 90 MILES EAST OF DAYTONA BEACH, FLORIDA, 194 MILES NORTH-NORTHWEST OF FREEPORT GRAND BAHAMA AND 317 MILES NORTHWEST NEW PROVIDENCE.

DORIAN IS MOVING TOWARD THE NORTH-NORTHWEST NEAR 8 MPH, AND A NORTHWEST OR NORTH-NORTHWEST MOTION IS EXPECTED THROUGH THIS MORNING.  A TURN TOWARD THE NORTH IS FORECAST BY THIS EVENING, FOLLOWED BY A TURN TOWARD THE NORTH-NORTHEAST ON THURSDAY.

MAXIMUM SUSTAINED WINDS ARE NEAR 105 MILES PER HOUR WITH HIGHER GUSTS. SOME WEAKENING IS EXPECTED DURING THE NEXT COUPLE OF DAYS, AND DORIAN IS EXPECTED TO REMAIN A POWERFUL HURRICANE DURING THE NEXT FEW DAYS.

HURRICANE FORCE WINDS EXTEND OUTWARD UP TO 60 MILES FROM THE CENTER AND TROPICAL STORM FORCE WINDS EXTEND OUTWARD UP TO 175 MILES FROM THE CENTER.

THIS WILL BE THE LAST ALERT ON HURRICANE DORIAN ISSUED BY THE BAHAMAS DEPARTMENT OF METEOROLOGY.  NEWS ITEMS WILL BE ISSUED EVERY 6 HOURS BEGINNING AT NOON TODAY.
