The Central Bank of The Bahamas is proud to announce its 31st Annual High School/ Junior Art Competition and Exhibition to be held from Friday, November 7th to November 28th, 2014. The objectives of the competition are to identify, recognize, and encourage young Bahamians who demonstrate talent in the visual arts.

REQUIREMENTS FOR PARTICIPATION
To qualify, participants must be citizens of The Bahamas, currently enrolled in secondary school or a 2014 graduate, who are not involved in commercial sales of artwork.

THEME
There are NO restrictions as to the theme of works to be entered for the competition. However, works reflecting aspects of Bahamian culture and society and of an experimental nature are encouraged as well as individualism.

QUANTITY
Each artist must submit three (3) works in one of the following media:
Sculpture/Drawing/Painting/Print/Collage/Other pictorial presentation.
If the artist submits works in more than one category of the above media, three (3) works are required for
each category. Failure to present the required number of works results in qualification from the
competition and exhibition.

GUIDELINES

The entries must meet the following requirements:

  1. Each entry must be the authentic work of the participating artist.
  2. Each entry must be accompanied by a separate and completely filled entry form.
  3. Repeat entries will not be accepted. Artists are encouraged to submit original works completed within the last year.
  4. Artists must demonstrate individualism, imagination in concept and in skillful use of materials.
  5. Sculptures must be free standing or mounted on appropriate bases. There will be no restrictions on size and or material used. However, wood, stone and metal will be preferred. Additionally, the work must be appropriate for placement within the Gallery space.
  6. Paintings and drawings must be properly presented and may be framed or the artist may choose to omit framing as a part of the creative process. ALL TWO DIMENSIONAL WORKS MUST HAVE SCREW EYES AND HANGING WIRE.
  7. Two-dimensional art works are encouraged to be no larger than 30” by 40”. Works that are deemed too large or cumbersome to hang may not be accepted for exhibition.

CONDITIONS

  1. All art works selected for exhibition shall remain in the custody of The Central Bank of The Bahamas for the entire period of the exhibition.
  2. The Bank would not be responsible for loss or damage except at the discretion of The Central Bank when such loss or damage is evidence as the direct result of a malicious act by the Bank.
  3. All sales by The Central Bank of The Bahamas, on behalf of artists, will be considered binding.
  4. All works must be collected within 10 days after the end of the exhibition. Works not collected will become part of collection of The Central Bank of The Bahamas or disposed of.
  5. All persons collecting works must present official form of ID and sign receipt of work(s).

JUDGING

A panel of judges will select the award winning entries, which will be eligible to receive cash prizes. Scholarships will be awarded to deserving artists based on their overall presentation and the assessment by the judges. The scholarships will be tenable at the College of The Bahamas or any accredited College outside The Bahamas for the study of art. Awardees who do not wish to study art will forfeit the awards.

AWARDS

  • First/Second/Third prizes to be awarded by the judges.
  • Up to three Honorable Mentions to be awarded by the judges.
  • Governor’s Choice Award -This will be presented to the artist of one piece selected by the Governor of The Central Bank of The Bahamas.
  • Best Participating School -The recipient of this award will be the school with the best overall participation in terms of the quality of work.
  • Special Scholarship Award -This award will be given, in addition to the usual scholarship awards, to,the deserving individual towards the completion of a two year Associate’s Degree in Art at The College of The Bahamas.
  • Most Outstanding Sculpture Award -This award will be presented to the sculptor exhibiting the most promise.
  • 14 And Under Award – This award will be presented to the participant age 14 or under exhibiting the most promise.

Qualities such as originality of expression, individualism, creative use of materials and presentation are among some of the criteria considered. The judges reserve the right to disqualify any entry where there is doubt as to authenticity. The Central Bank stipulates that the winning entries will become the property of the Bank. Participants therefore enter this competition in agreement that the Central Bank be allowed to display winning pieces in any forum including but not limited to the Central Bank’s website. All other entries may be offered for sale during the exhibition.

APPLICATION FORMS
Entry Forms may be obtained from the Central Bank of The Bahamas or the Bank’s website (centralbankbahamas.com) and in the Family Islands at the Administrator’s Office or the District Education Offices of the Ministry of Education.

All entries MUST be delivered to The Central Bank of The Bahamas no later than Friday, 24th October, 2014. Late entries will NOT be accepted. The Grand Opening and Awards Presentation will take place on Friday, 21st November, 2014 at 6 p.m..

NB:

All entries submitted will be judged. However, only works of the highest quality and presented in accordance with the guidelines will be exhibited. Works not exhibited will be stored for 10 days after opening of exhibition. The Central Bank of The Bahamas will not be responsible for works left beyond this period.

All artworks must be collected from The Central Bank of The Bahamas within 10 days after the exhibition’s end.
