(Rock Sound, Eleuthera) – The much anticipated 4th annual Knowledge Bowl Competition, hosted by the South Eleuthera Mission, was held from Monday, March 4th to Thursday, March 7th, 2013. The highly competitive event covered academic subject areas at the primary school level, in the areas of Math, English Language, General Science, Social Studies and Religion and there were a total of 310 questions and answers formulated for the competition in the subject areas.
All five primary schools in the South Eleuthera district participated (Tarpum Bay, Rock Sound, Green Castle, Deep Creek and Wemyss Bight), with each school having a team of 3 players to represent them at the competition.
On Monday, the Knowledge Bowl started off at 4:30pm, with game #1 between Tarpum Bay Primary School, the returning champions, and the Rock Sound Primary School. After 4 rounds and an hour of hard fought competition, Tarpum Bay beat out Rock Sound with a score of 11,350 to 9,400.
On Tuesday, day two of competition, Tarpum Bay returned to take on Deep Creek Primary School, and once again came out on top with a score of 11,350 to 10,400 points. Tarpum Bay at this point automatically advanced into the championship game scheduled to be played on Thursday, March 7th.
On Wednesday, day three of competition, Wemyss Bight Primary School went up against Green Castle Primary School, in a game which turned out to be fierce battle. In the end, Green Castle Primary School won by the just the skin of their teeth, with a very tight score of 14,450 to 14,400 over Wemyss Bight. This meant that Green Castle would return on day four for the Championship game against Tarpum Bay.
On Thursday, March 7th, 2013, the championship game got underway at 3:40pm, and lasted for 1 hour and 20 minutes. As the two top teams fought it out round after round, Green Castle School kept the lead up to the 3rd round. Tarpum Bay demonstrated an aggressive will to hold on to their winning streak for a third year In the final 2 rounds, giving Green Castle Primary a real run for their money.

In the 5th and final round – the bonus round, where ten challenging questions were worth either 1,000 or 1,500 points each, Tarpum Bay got the last question correct, worth 1,500 points. That question, in the subject area of General Science was: The use of solar power to provide electricity to homes and businesses will – a) conserve fuel used to produce electricity, b) contribute to a cleaner environment, c) lead to more affordable electricity or d) All of the above. After Tarpum Bay selected the correct answer of (d), everyone in the audience sat on the edge of their seats, until the score of 15,800 for Tarpum Bay Primary to 14,900 for Green Castle Primary was announced, and revealed the winner of the game and the champions for the 2013 competition. The audience roared as Tarpum Bay team players and their supporters cheered and celebrated their victory.
The winning team of Tarpum Bay Primary included, Oriana Carey, Traliyah Carey and Denica Rolle. The runners up from Green Castle Primary were, Tyler McPhee, Lorenzo Hanna and Alexia Rolle.
Tarpum Bay Primary School was awarded with the floating trophy for the 3rd consecutive year, along with a $250 gift certificate to Office General to assist the school in purchasing needed school supplies. All 6 finalists, from both Green Castle and Tarpum Bay Primary Schools were presented with medals of accomplishment by Mr. Samuel Cartwright, Administrator of the South Eleuthera Mission, and Mrs Sharon Carey, Teacher and Tutor with the After School Program at The South Eleuthera Mission.
