Another major fire struck in South Eleuthera with a Variety/Grocery Store (D&D) situated in the heart of the township of Tarpum Bay, operated by 32 year old, Mr. Jason Carey, being gutted by fire on Sunday morning, February 24th, 2013.
Jason’s father, Mr. David Carey, whose home is less than six feet from the building which burned in the blaze, said that he and his family were alerted to the fire in the wee hours of the morning around 3am.
According to Carey, the local fire emergency service arrived about twenty minutes later, and were successful in containing the fire to just the one building. Evidence of the averted fire threat to his home in the form of the store’s roof gables – lay right next to his house, where they had fallen after the flames had ripped through the store’s roof structure. The family suspects the fire to have started in the electrical wiring system of the building.
Mr. David Carey, who owns another store front just around the corner from the scene of the devastating fire, estimated roughly that the value of the decimated building – which he also owned was around $70,000, while the contents of the store, lost by his son Jason would have been at least $30,000 worth of inventory and store implements.
The building, which was not insured, stated Carey, would now have to be demolished and cleared away – while he and his son would have to decide how to move forward from such a loss. No one was injured by the blaze.
Building owner, Mr. David Carey was busy cleaning the front of the burnt out store on Sunday, hours after the overnight fire.
