Coral Harbour Base, 18 July (RBDF) – The Royal Bahamas Defence Force has implemented a new element in its strategy of combatting the illicit activities in the country. The k-9 Unit of the Defence Force’s Military Police section will enhance the Force’s capability in its fight in protecting the territorial borders of The Bahamas.

This new area of the Force is headed by Sub Lieutenant Denzel Marche and four marines; Leading Seaman Rio Knowles, Able Woman Marine Nikira Rolle, Able Seaman Georgino Bodie and Marine Seaman Ryan Bridgewater. The Marines have successfully completed a six-month dog handling course in Havana, Cuba from January 20 through July 2.

This exercise afforded them the opportunity to train with the K-9 dogs which will be able to detect illegal drugs, firearms, explosives and search and rescue efforts. The Defence Force presently has four canines that will assist in this effort. They include two Springer Spaniels and two Belgium Malinois.
