(Eleuthera, Bahamas) – The inaugural ‘One Eleuthera Games’ have been announced to take place in 2016 during the two week period beginning on June 25th and running up until the Independence weekend. Nine (9) competitive sporting events and two (2) recreational sporting events are being planned with four age groupings of; 8-12, 13-15, 16-18, and 19+ as follows:
Competitive:
- basketball (male and female divisions)
- volleyball (male and female divisions)
- slow pitch softball (male and female divisions)
- track and field (male and female divisions)
- tennis (male and female divisions)
- swimming (male and female divisions)
- sailing (male and female divisions)
- baseball (male division)
- soccer (male division)
Recreational:
- darts (male and female divisions)
- dominoes (male division)
The Eleutheras will be divided into three competitive groupings. The North Eleuthera group will include townships north of the Glass Window bridge, with yellow uniforms. Central Eleuthera will include townships from Gregory Town south to Savannah Sound – with orange uniforms, and the South Eleuthera group will include all townships going south from Tarpum Bay to Bannerman Town – with green uniforms.
Uniform colours were chosen to emulate the colors of the iconic ‘Eleuthera Pineapple’, and the overall logo for the inaugural event is meant to do the same. A high school based logo competition is set to be completed on Friday, January 22nd, and will be decided on by the ‘One Eleuthera Games’ executive committee. Along with members from townships throughout The Eleutheras, the executive committee is spearheaded by Chairman, Johnny Butler; Secretary, Tony Crean; One Eleuthera Coordinator, Errol McPhee; and a number of area Directors.
Opening day for the games, on June 25th is set to take place in Governor’s Harbour, kicking off with a sailing regatta, volleyball and basketball. Junkanoo pieces as well as bands are also on the schedule from North, Central and South Eleuthera groups. A special Olympics bocce ball exhibition game is also planned for opening day.
