Against the backdrop of rising global tensions, Commodore (Ret.) Tellis Bethel unveils his latest book, For Peace Sake: Making The Bahamas the Peace Capital of the Americas, a bold and visionary framework for positioning The Bahamas as a global peace influencer.
In this groundbreaking work, Bethel introduces a transformative four-point peace plan that leverages The Bahamas’ historical significance as the birthplace of the modern Americas, its renowned hospitality, and breathtaking natural beauty. His vision reimagines the nation as a premier hub for dialogue, diplomacy, and mediation on peace-related issues, including geopolitical tensions, climate change, arbitration, health, advanced technology, sustainable tourism, and more.

Drawing on his deep understanding of Bahamian heritage and distinguished naval career, Bethel charts a strategic course for safeguarding the nation’s future as it journeys towards its Centennial Jubilee as an independent country in 2073.
“The unique aspects of our history, geography, and culture positions us to become the ‘Peace Capital of the Americas’—not just for our benefit, but for the betterment of humanity,” says Bethel.
For Peace Sake is the third installment in Bethel’s trilogy, The Lucayan Sea: A Case for Naming the Historic Waters of The Bahamas and the Turks and Caicos Islands, following The Lucayan Islands and The Lucayan Sea—Birthplace of the Americas.
The book also presents a dynamic framework to address pressing national challenges, including rising crime, mental health crises, unemployment, and the erosion of family and community structures. Key initiatives include naming the waters of The Bahamas to strengthen national heritage, reinforce sovereignty, and symbolize a commitment to peace; integrating peace-focused projects into the Governor-General’s Volunteer Bahamas program; and creating business and employment opportunities to promote community well-being and economic growth.
More than a book, For Peace Sake is a rallying cry for Bahamians to embrace their heritage, unite behind a shared vision, and forge a future where The Bahamas emerges as an inspirational symbol of peace in the Americas and beyond.
