ERYC Cleanups in December and January

Local police youth program, the Eleuthera Royal Youth Corp (ERYC) in South Eleuthera, led by Corporal Renardo Brown, based at the Rock Sound Police Station took part in a clean up campaign during the months of December and January. In December, the group tackled the stretch of highway between the settlements of Wemyss Bight and Waterford, removing garbage and debris from both sides of the road. The debris collected totaled (13) large garbage bags of trash, consisting of bottles, cans, various plastics, and paper.

“The garbage alongside the road was an eye-sore to residents and visitors, so the area was refreshing to view after the removal of the garbage,” said Corporal Brown. As the young men worked, passing residents, pedestrians and motorists expressed their thanks to the team for volunteering, said Brown, and also encouraged them to continue to be role models, upstanding and respectful young men within their communities. The day ended with more words of encouragement, exercise sessions, drill practice and fun games of basketball.

On Saturday, January 24th, the initiative continued along Queen’s Highway, Rock Sound, South Eleuthera, in the areas between the Rock Sound International Airport and the Preston H. Albury High School. On this day the ERYC was joined by the Kiwanis Club of South Eleuthera, led by president Nicola Hall and her team. The group removed garbage and debris from both sides of the roadway and from the parking lot of the Rock Sound International Airport.

These initiatives, shared ERYC leader Brown, continue to strengthen partnership between the community, civic groups and the police through positive youth engagement.
