Junkanoo Summer Festival kicked off in Briland on Saturday, July 2nd, 2016, just in time for the flocks of U.S. visitors arriving on island celebrating their Independence holiday weekend. Tourism Manager for Harbour Island, Mrs. June Dean, extended a special welcome to people enjoying a getaway to the island during the holiday, joined by Chief Councilor, Ms. Nora Albury; Councilman Mr. Martin Grant, and Tourism Officer, Ms. Brittany Percentie, who all commented that Harbour Island was full during that weekend, making the festivities very timely.
Along with pineapple eating, watermelon eating, find the ham and jump off ‘da dock’ competitions earlier during the day on Saturday, the crowd at the Festival site was treated to a show by the talented Bahamian entertainer, D Mac – who got his audience moving in time with him and fully engaged. He was backed up by the local ‘One, Two, Three Band’. Sweet Junkanoo music rounded out the evening with a large, combined Junkanoo rushout with the Hill Top Warriors and the Zulu Dancers, which rocked Bay Street until shortly after midnight.
