(Eleuthera, Bahamas) – The Royal Bahamas Police Force (RBPF) Eleuthera division recently announced that they are taking immediate action to comprehensively enforce four very specific rules of the road concerning motorists and the vehicles they drive throughout the length of Eleuthera.

The infractions police will be on the lookout for include; throwing garbage from a moving vehicle, which carries a fine of $100; illegal dumping, carrying a fine of $200; driving with an unsecured load, which has a fine of $80; and driving a defective vehicle, which carries a fine of $200.

In a brief interview with The Eleutheran newspaper, Inspector Nigel Rolle of the Central Eleuthera division explained that the ultimate goals behind these actions were threefold. First, to keep the island clean of the constantly replaced roadside garbage seen strewn along the length of the island; to aid in the prevention of serious road accidents, and to prevent the infestation of unwanted rodents and insects.

Throwing garbage from a moving vehicle is considered to be disposing of any waste either willfully or by negligence, emphasized Inspector Rolle.  He also explained that illegal dumping included any person with commercial or residential waste removed from their own property to another or onto government property, not designated as an official dumping area. Rolle added that unsecured loads involved people driving vehicles transporting commercial or residential garbage or other materials without having their load properly secured – including being overloaded with too many items. He described some some examples of defective vehicles as those with no tailgates or no covers, being engaged in transporting loads, and warned that in addition to fines they would be taken off the road until the defective issues were resolved.

The Inspector also communicated that the Eleuthera division of the RBPF asked that all motorists and citizens to adhere to these road laws and stated that those not doing so will  be placed before the courts.
