Eleuthera’s 2015, Jr. Minister of Tourism winner, Mr. Philip Moss of North Eleuthera High School, being congratulated by the 2014 winner and the current Jr. Minister of Tourism of The Bahamas, Ms. Taliah Cooper of Preston H. Albury High School.
(Palmetto Point, Eleuthera, The Bahamas) On Monday morning, March 23rd, 2015, Philip Moss of the North Eleuthera High School, the only male contender amongst six bright students from high schools throughout the island won the 2015 title of Jr. Minister of Tourism for the island of Eleuthera – taking over from 2014 winner, Taliah Cooper, who went on to win the overall Bahamas Jr. Minister title in New Providence in early 2014. He will now go on to compete in the national Jr. Minister of Tourism event, scheduled for April 16th, 2015.
The excitement began at 11am on Monday at the Jr. Minister of Tourism (Eleuthera preliminaries) Speech competition, which was held at the Eleuthera Cancer Society’s Wellness Center in Palmetto Point.
Six students from four schools, who participated in the competition, along with current Bahamas Jr. Minister of Tourism (L-R): Patrinique Adderley of Preston H. Albury High School, Brianna Atkinson of Harbour Island All Age School, Safyha Bryan of Central Eleuthera High School, Philip Moss of North Eleuthera High School, Taliah Cooper the outgoing Jr. Minister of Tourism of the Bahamas (Eleuthera winner 2014), Paulisha Thompson of Preston H. Albury High school, and Ivanna Ferguson of Windermere High School.
Each of the participating students presented on the topic, “Diversifying the Tourism Product“.
They were well supported by coaches, teachers, and groups of peers from their respective schools.
Chief judge for the Speech Competition was Nickal Fernander of the Department of Social Services, and she was joined by Nurse Regina Ingraham, and Deniqua Sands, all said to be well seasoned ‘Toastmasters’. Auditor, Susan Culmer, also assisted as Tally judge, and Averi Cleare with the Ministry of Tourism (MOT) team in Harbour Island was the Timekeeper.

Ms. Deborah Young with the MOT team in Governor’s Harbour, key organizer of the event, was fully supported by her MOT colleagues; Ms. Jacquelyn Gibson, Tourism Manager based in Governor’s Harbour; Ms. Glenda Johnson; Mrs. Teri Bonnette; Ms. Averi Cleare; and Mrs. June Dean, Tourism Manager based in Harbour Island.
Winning the Jr. Minister of Tourism title for the island of Eleuthera involved both the Speech Competition held on Monday, March 23rd, 2015, as well as an individual Interview segment, which each competitor took part in. The final result was a combination of points earned from both the Interview and the Speech Competition.
