On Tuesday, October 14th, during a special Heroes Day Assembly being celebrated by the P.A. Gibson Primary School, Mr. Cladwell Farrington Jr. was singled out for honours and recognition, not only as a survivor of the Defence Force HMBS Flamingo incident in 1980 – where the Cuban airforce sank the Bahamian Defence Force Vessel, while they were fulfilling their duty to protect Bahamian waters, but also as a present day community hero, involved in giving back in a myriad of little ways to his hometown, where he is now retired.
As part of the honours laid on Mr. Farrington during the morning celebration, he was presented with a painting, by Kishan Munroe, a full time ‘socially conscious artist’ – and Ragged Island native, who created works of art surrounding the incident. The painting depicted a re-creation of the scene at sea of the HMBS Flamingo going down with officers in the waters surrounding the shocking event, as interpreted by interviews with survivors. A full exhibition of Kishan Munroe’s artistic work telling the story of the HMBS Flamingo can be found on display in the Senate building in New Providence.
