A severe thunderstorm during the dawn hours of July 11th, 2014 disrupted utility services for residents in suburbs north of the town of Governors Harbour, Eleuthera, Bahamas for over 24h. The storm which developed over the area, lasted for just over 2 hours and during that period delivered dangerous lightning and heavy rain-measured at about 18 millimeters in parts of the affected region. Manager of Water and Sewage on the island, Anthony Bostwick, revealed that the Reverse Osmosis (RO) plant in Governor’s Harbour was struck by lightning which caused a disruption in the delivery of water. The company expected to have the issue resolved by Saturday morning and water flow was expected to resume. The Bahamas Telecommunications Company confirmed on Saturday morning that lightning also struck their equipment in the Banana Beach area affecting 74 landline customers. The company said their technicians were working at the site and expected to complete repairs on Saturday.
No specific warning had been issued by the Department of Meteorology on Friday morning for the area, however, the daily Marine forecast had warned all week of weather systems over the islands that could trigger severe thunderstorms.
