Rotary International’s chief representative at the United Nation in New York will be the guest speaker at a special event at the British Colonial Hilton on February 21 under the patronage of Governor-General Sir Arthur Foulkes.
The event is being held to raise funds for the Model United Nations Sessions scheduled for April at the College of The Bahamas. Both events are being supported by the Rotary Clubs of the Bahamas in conjunction with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Futa (pictured) is a past general secretary of Rotary International and a former chief operating officer of the prestigious Rotary Foundation, which supports a variety of worthwhile causes – including global campaigns to eradicate polio and approach challenges such as poverty, illiteracy, and malnutrition.
The Model United Nations Sessions (MUNS) is a simulation of the United Nations within an academic platform, and first took place in the Bahamas in 1997. The objective is to educate and train participants in matters relating to civics, globalisation issues, communication and diplomacy.
Students from 19 senior schools in New Providence, Grand Bahamas, Abaco, Andros, Eleuthera, Bimini and Berry Islands will be assigned a country and take on the role of diplomats in a simulated session of an intergovernmental organisation. The Rotary Clubs of The Bahamas in conjunction with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs have collaborated for the past 16 years to facilitate the MUNS programme.
All proceeds from the dinner presentation at the Hilton will be applied to student and teacher travel and accommodation. The participating school teams each consist of two faculty advisors and four students. Faculty advisors guide the students in their research activities and overall preparation. The winning team goes to the United Nations General Assembly meeting in September.
