The Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc was established in 1978 by Mrs. Thelma McMillan, who also once taught in Eleuthera.

Over the three days there were a number of enriching and enlightening experiences for the young women, who are within months, moving beyond the sheltered environment of the high school classrooom.

On the Friday morning, a few of the honourees made an appeareance on Bahamas@Sunrise.  Following this the girls made a courtesy call on the Minister of Education; Minister of Youth, Sports & Culture and the Governor General.  They subequently toured the College of the Bahamas and on the evening attended a Meet & Greet with a Soro, Mrs. Mavis Collie, who was also a host to the Family Island students.

On Saturday morning, they took an exam and participated in an essay competition at the College of the Bahamas and performed community service in Bain & Grants town in the afternoon.

In addition to the valuable experience, it was a good time for networking as the young adults made new friends from throughout the  Bahamas and in the process enjoyed themselves.
