Coming off its national win in 2012 Jr. Junkanoo on Bay Street, in Nassau, the island community of Spanish Wells is already in preparation mode for defending their title.
According to a well placed source, the 2013 Jr. Junkanoo group is making plans to be bigger and bolder. A new set of instruments for the brass section are said to be already on order and the committees are in place and others being formed to cover all aspects of making the island group fully ready.
A member of the Jr. Junkanoo Committee, discussed his disappointment with the extent to which the island was “under covered” in the media, following their winning performance on Bay Street. “But that only makes us stronger,” he added.
A Junkanoo Fest is planned for April and several fund raising events throughout the year.
The Spanish Wells group did not participate in the All Eleuthera Junkanoo in January, citing problems with costumes and costs, reportedly estimated to be about $4000.00. In addition to their November 2012 performance in Nassau they performed on St. George’s Cay on Boxing day and on January 5th.
