2013 marks the 11th year of collaboration between the Emory University School of Nursing and local health officials on Eleuthera.

The university has been sending teams of student nurses to the island every year since 2002, when they first spoke with Mr. Shaun Ingraham of Tarpum Bay.

Through their visits, they are presented with the opportunity to immerse themselves in community nursing at the local clinics, as well as interact with local school children in educational presentations at a number of the junior and senior high schools.

On Tuesday, January 8th, 2013, The Eleutheran caught up with three members of a nine person team on island from the Emory University School of Nursing, who spent one week traversing the local clinics in central and south Eleuthera – arriving on island on Saturday, January 5th, 2013.

Laura Garcia of Atlanta, Georgia; Nettly Nicolas of Miami, Florida and Zeenat Momin, also from Atlanta were 1st and 2nd year nursing students, spending time at the Governor’s Harbour clinic on Tuesday morning, before heading to the Central Eleuthera High School later in the afternoon.

The young women, shared that the Eleuthera experience was their top pick, having also had the choice of going to Jamaica, the Dominican Republic or Haiti.  After hearing presentations from past students who had visited the island, they concluded that Eleuthera would give them a broader experience in community nursing, gaining experiences in a wide variety of services, including working with the elderly, the very young and everyone in between.

They also shared that the very best aspect of their experience on the island, was the unique easy friendliness of the people they had met, commenting specifically on the gracious ‘good morning’ they received from everyone they encountered at the beginning of each day.
