6:45pm:

(Eleuthera, Bahamas) It’s Christmas Eve and, as if the approximately three hour outage on the night of December 23rd was not enough, electricity in Central Eleuthera is out yet again. To the sound of exasperation from the customers in a local store, the lights flickered and went out at about 6:20pm. The hope is that it won’t be long tonight.

On a night, when lights should be blinking, music playing, cakes baking and excitement building, the Bahamas Electricity Company (BEC) has yet again let its bill paying customers down.

BEC’s outage on Sunday night started a near 24 hour period of “NO WATER” for many residents. As happens often, the supply from the General Electric (GE) owned Reverse Osmosis Plant in Governor’s Harbour stops flowing with a BEC power failure (tonight, thankfully it stayed on). Less frequently though not rarely, and as was the case on Sunday evening, even when the lights come back on there is nothing but the sound of a vacuum coming from the taps.

Could it be, that for many, BEC will be the GRINCH that stole christmas?
