Yet again, authorities in Eleuthera and the Defence Force of The Bahamas has been called into action to apprehend illegal Haitian immigrants and their vessel, attempting to land under the cover of darkness near the Glass Window bridge.

At about 11:47pm on Thursday the 6th September, 2012, police were alerted via phone that a Haitian vessel had run aground in the area of the Glass Window bridge and a group of persons believed to be Haitian nationals were running in bushes nearby. A team of officers headed by Supt. I. Davis and Chief Immigration Officer on Eleuthera, Burns, apprehended a total of twelve (12) Haitian Nationals. All suspects were seen by Dr. Ajero and were found to be in good health.

The Defence Force, which arrived in Eleuthera around 4pm in the afternoon on Friday towed the 30 ft. motorized cabin vessel, used to transport the illegal immigrants to the Bahamas, into Hatchet Bay, from the bay in Gregory Town, using its 5 man crew, P45 vessel.  Reportedly, the impounded boat was to be taken on to New Providence, where a decision would be made as to the fate of the vessel.

The vessel used to bring almost 2 dozen Haitians to Eleuthera on Thursday September 6th 2012

“New Faces Every Day” is an increasingly common phrase on Eleuthera, in reference to the perception of a continuous stream of illegal immigrants hiding in plain sight on the island.
