(August 30, 2012 Eleuthera, The Bahamas) The Rotaract Club of Eleuthera marks an expanding presence on Eleuthera with new memberships, partnerships, and service opportunities. Last Thursday, the club made a special appearance at the Rotary Club of Eleuthera’s weekly meeting. The two groups came together at the Eleuthera Arts and Cultural Center in Tarpum Bay to celebrate and welcome new Rotaract members: Ashley Akerberg, Mark Daniels, and Jeremiah Sweeting. The group is also excited to welcome Tempess Johnson who was unable to attend the induction ceremony. “After such a successful first year, I am excited by how much we will be able to accomplish with the new energy and ideas from these four community members,” said club President Tyson Morley.

An affiliate program of Rotary International for ages 18-30, Rotaract was initiated to serve a “grassroots level, with members addressing their communities’ physical and social needs while promoting international understanding and peace through a framework of friendship and service”. In fulfillment of this mission, the club is planning an upcoming event at the Tarpum Bay Library to celebrate World Literacy Day on September 8, 2012 at 11am. The group will be serving treats alongside reading and writing activities in order to promote youth literacy on Eleuthera.

The clubs also recently showed local support and national pride at the homecoming event for “The Golden Knights,” winners of the men’s 4×400 Olympic relay. Rotaract Immediate Past President Kalin Griffin smiled in her best national colors as she stood on stage and presented the relay team with a $2,500 check from Rotary and Rotaract Club of Eleuthera, plus 3days/2 nights stay at Pineapple Fields Resort in Governor’s Harbour.

Chartered just one year ago, Rotaract of Eleuthera has already received regional honors for outstanding service from the Rotaract District 7020 and is poised to embark on its second year of local support. “We are proud of our Rotaract Club as they continue to make us all proud. In one short year this club of highly motivated young people has already accomplished a gold award at the district level in Jamaica. We congratulate this club of young professionals as they enthusiastically put service above self!” said Rotary Club of Eleuthera President Jaqueline Gibson.

As part of Rotary International’s New Generations Month and in celebration of Rotaract Club of Eleuthera’s one-year anniversary, the club will be hosting a social event September 15th with DJ, fun and fellowship at 7:30 p.m. at the Eleuthera Arts and Cultural Center. Tickets for the event are available for a $25 donation.
