She’s Back! Handbag Designer Teri M. Bethel Rekindles Her Creative Fire

(The celebrated Bahamian artist returns to her roots with a fresh wave of timeless, wearable art.)

After six years away from the hum of her trusty sewing machine, acclaimed handbag designer Teri M. Bethel is making a bold and beautiful return to her first love—crafting exquisite, hand-painted handbags that merge art, fashion, and island flair.

“I always say, ‘It’s not over until the final act unfolds,’” the Eleuthera resident reflects with a warm smile. “Even on my busiest days, the creative spark never left me. It was just waiting to rise again.”

A name synonymous with elegant, statement-making custom-made accessories, Bethel is no stranger to the spotlight. Her boutique brand, Teri Monique Handbags, is known for vibrant, structured designs that have adorned the arms of women at weddings, royal events, high society, church, and casual events. One loyal client compares her purse to an American Express card— “You don’t want to leave home without it.”

Teri’s artistic roots run deep. Her mother sewed lovingly for her daughters in their childhood, her aunt was known for crafting stylish ladies’ wear and uniforms, and her grandmother, an expert seamstress in New York, created top-tier men’s dress shirts before returning to Nassau. That family legacy found its way to Teri, who started in the late 1980s by turning simple T-shirts into painted masterpieces from her home.

As demand for her wearable art grew, she and her husband, Tellis, opened Wearable Art, a garment manufacturing company on Mackey Street. It quickly became a go-to for shoppers eager to get their hands on her painted resort wear, neckties, and eventually, her signature handbags with coordinating custom-painted shoes.

In the years that followed, Teri devoted her energy to teaching others how to paint and create purses, and then to writing and publishing books, momentarily setting aside her sewing machine. However, the call to create never faded. Now, with renewed energy and artistic clarity, she is re-entering the fashion scene with a new collection of handbags, painted tops, and neckties that celebrate individuality and timeless style.

Each piece in her custom-painted handbag line showcases Teri’s signature flair, whether it’s her intricately painted fabric or her use of native straw materials. Her handbags aren’t just accessories; they’re conversation pieces—exquisitely crafted works of art with a purpose.

While she continues her work in publishing, Bethel is thrilled to balance both passions once again. “This new chapter is deeply fulfilling,” she says. “It reminds me—and hopefully others—that creativity can bloom even in the busiest seasons of life.”
