Residents and businesses throughout Eleuthera are once again expressing serious concern over the persistent and unreliable electricity supply being provided by Bahamas Power and Light Company Ltd. (BPL).
The prolonged outage experienced last night, followed by repeated on-and-off fluctuations, reportedly wreaked havoc on household appliances, electronics, refrigeration systems and business equipment. For many residents, these incidents are no longer occasional disruptions; they have become an almost daily reality.
At any given point, it appears that at least one community on Eleuthera is without electricity. These constant outages and voltage fluctuations are placing an unnecessary financial burden on families and businesses already struggling with the high cost of living and operating on the island.
Residents deserve more than silence and uncertainty. They deserve clear explanations, accurate timelines and meaningful action.
Toward the end of last year, BPL hosted a town hall meeting in Rock Sound, South Eleuthera, where representatives reportedly promised to provide ongoing updates regarding the electricity challenges facing the island. A similar meeting planned for North Eleuthera was cancelled because of the Glass Window Bridge closure and, ironically, a power outage.
Since the Rock Sound meeting, however, little meaningful information has been provided to the public. Residents are still waiting for answers regarding the condition of Eleuthera’s electricity infrastructure, the causes of the frequent outages and the specific measures being taken to deliver a stable and dependable service.
These circumstances are particularly concerning given statements made during the recent election campaign suggesting that Eleuthera had no significant electricity issues. The daily experiences of residents tell a very different story. Communities across the island continue to endure prolonged outages, sudden interruptions and dangerous fluctuations in the electricity supply.
BPL must now provide the people of Eleuthera with a full and transparent update addressing:
- The causes of the ongoing outages and electricity fluctuations;
- The present condition and generating capacity of the Eleuthera power system;
- The maintenance and replacement plan for aging equipment;
- The timeline for restoring a reliable and stable electricity supply;
- The process through which residents may report and seek compensation for appliances damaged by outages or power surges; and
- The frequency with which public progress reports will be issued.
Reliable electricity is not a luxury. It is essential for homes, schools, clinics, hotels, restaurants, grocery stores, water systems and every sector of Eleuthera’s economy.
The people of Eleuthera should not be expected to accept continuous disruptions without explanation, accountability or a clear plan for improvement. We therefore call upon BPL, the Member of Parliament and the relevant government authorities to address the island urgently and provide residents with honest answers and measurable solutions.
The people of Eleuthera have been patient for long enough. It is time for transparency, accountability and dependable electricity.
