The Eleuthera School Sports Association (ESSA) with a new roster of leaders, on November 7th, 2015, hosted an island-wide high school Volleyball Tournament on the expansive park grounds of the Resource Center in Savannah Sound. Four of the five government high schools within the Eleuthera District took part, including Preston Albury High School (PHAHS), North Eleuthera High School (NEHS), Central Eleuthera High School (CEHS), and Harbour Island All Age School (HIAAS). They competed in four divisions of junior girls, senior girls, junior boys and senior boys.
It was a beautiful setting, with the bright blue’Sound’ as a backdrop and the young players were giving their all, even if for a number of them it was evident that they were new to the game. Just attending these games is a bit of a feat for students from the North and Southern settlements where the busing fees according to reliable sources, run between $600.00 and $800.00.
Winners in the four divisions were NEHS (junior girls – MVP Mona Toussaint), HIAAS (senior girls – MVP Felicity Lewis), PHAHS (junior boys – MVP Shawn Rolle), and PHAHS (senior boys – MVP Lance Pelecanos)
According to newly installed President of the ESSA, Principal Yorick Sands of HIAAS, the group’s objective is to take a more coordinated approach to sporting events in the District and to encourage inter-school competition and play in a variety of sporting disciplines, including volleyball, softball, basketball, track & field, and others. The new positions now held within the ESSA include Yorick Sands, President and Public Relations; Michael Culmer, Vice President and Asst. Treasurer; Herman Johnson, Vice President; Jamie Williams, Secretary; Saron Cox, Treasurer; Sidney Curtis, Chaplain; Sherwin Major, Scheduling Officer; Tony Crean, Special Activities Coordinator; and Johnny Butler, Track Meet Director.
