Community Outreach: RBPF Hosts Crime Prevention Music/Band Development Workshop

Geared towards youth of ages eight to twenty-five

The Eleuthera Division of the Royal Bahamas Police Force (RBPF) hosted a music/band workshop in February, aimed at both enhancing professional development in the instrumental music field as well as deterring criminal activity amongst young people. Geared towards youth between the ages of 8 to 25 years old, the workshop saw participation from young Eleutherans spanning the entire island, from Bannerman Town to Spanish Wells and Harbour Island.

The workshop took place over the course of one day, on February 20th, beginning at 12 noon until 7:30 p.m. later that evening. Police Sergeant 1009 Pratt, assisted by Police W/Sergeant 2892 Gomez, led the sessions, which took place at the Harbour Island All Age School.

Police workshop facilitators, Sergeants Pratt and Gomez, discussed theoretical and practical studies that included – notes values, scale structure, chord progressions, breathing exercises, and dicipline drills. The young attendees were also introduced to scholarship opportunities, the concept of being leaders, the importance of team work – along with focusing on their academic studies.

At the end of the workshop, Officer Gomez, shared that he had witnessed an excitement amongst the young participants, and felt that they had garnered a better understanding of all the concepts and information shared with them. At the end of the evening, participants from throughout the island were transported back to their homes, going as far as the Preston H. Albury campus in Rock Sound, where remaining students were accounted for and collected by their parents and guardians.
