(Eleuthera, Bahamas) – Many residents of Eleuthera of direct Haitian lineage or connected through matrimony or otherwise, over the weekend observed Haiti Flag Day 2015 (officially May 18th). In Savannah Sound, Central Eleuthera, on Saturday, May 16th, there was much celebration in the forms of dance, music, performances and vibrant color. Additionally, t-shirts bore messages seemingly aimed at the wider community, reading, “YES I AM ONE OF THEM” and others reading, “I DON’T SPEAK HAITIAN (HYSHUN), I SPEAK CREOLE“. In the Haitian community of Blackwood in North Eleuthera the celebration took place on Sunday with a repeat of much of the excitement of the day earlier.
