NASSAU, The Bahamas (By Kathryn Campbell, BIS) – The innovation and creativity of primary school students were on display at the Department of Education’s (Science and Technology Section Art and Design Unit) 17th Visual Arts Exhibition Awards Ceremony for Primary Schools.
The exhibition was held in the Center Court of the Mall at Marathon on Thursday, April 23, and sponsored for the 17th year by J. S. Johnson & Company Ltd. The children’s artwork explored the theme: ‘Art an Expression of Life.’
Sixteen schools competed in the exhibition; four represented the Family Islands. The Department has hosted three exhibitions for the year including exhibitions for junior and senior high schools.
Pamela Chandler, Senior Education Officer, Art and Design Unit, thanked the Family Island schools for their involvement in the exhibition and the teachers and principals for their support.
In the Family Island Division, the winners were: Tarpum Bay Primary School, first place; Rock Sound Primary School; second place; Pirates Wells Primary School, third.
In the New Providence Division, Woodcock Primary won first place, Thelma Gibson Primary School, finished second place, and Yellow Elder Primary School was third.
The winning schools received trophies and of the schools received prizes for participation.
Highlights of the ceremony included music by Albury Sayle Primary School’s Choir, Woodcock Primary School’s Band and Junior Junkanoo Group, and a liturgical dance by Shawana Johnson and the Flagettes of Sybil Strachan Primary School. (BIS Photos/Letisha Henderson)
