(Nassau, Bahamas) The island of Eleuthera, with its current residents representing about 3% of the nation’s population, made its presence felt at the recent Annual National Awards held in New Providence, where top students who sat the 2014 national Bahamas Junior Certificate (BJC) and Bahamas General Certificate of Secondary Education (BGCSE) examinations were recognized for their achievements. The exams are given to students at the end of the Junior High School studies (Grade 9) and Senior High School studies (Grade 12), although they may be taken in other years, if students are prepared to do so.

Of the 28 BGCSE subjects offered, 5 of the national top A result awards presented were captured by Eleuthera students, including:

  • Dallas Albury of Spanish Wells All Age School (SWAAS) who received the top A result in Mathematics;
  • Daquan Cash of North Eleuthera High School (NEHS) received the top A result in Carpentry & Joinery;
  • Brennen Williams of NEHS received the top A result in Religious Studies;
  • Delphine Carroll of Central Eleuthera High School (CEHS) received the top A result in Graphical Communication;  and
  • Desheny Correa of CEHS received the top A result in Spanish.

Of the 10 BJC subjects offered, 3 of the national top A result awards presented were snatched up by Eleuthera students as well, including;

  • Saiydah Bryan of CEHS who received the top A result in Language Arts (6A’s and 1B overall);
  • Jason Pinder of SWAAS who received the top A result in Mathematics (5A’s and 2B’s overall) ; and
  • Charlton Kade Roberts, also of SWAAS, who received the top A result in Social Studies (7A’s overall).

Delphine Carroll of CEHS earned the Best BGCSE 2014 results for the island of Eleuthera, having achieved 5 A’s and 1 C.  Two students of SWAAS tied for first place, earning the Best BJC 2014 results for Eleuthera, with 7 A’s each – Erin Mullin and Charlton Kade Roberts.

Individual Eleuthera Schools were also recognized for their national performance  as a whole in specific categories.

  • CEHS received a 1st place award for Outstanding Performance by Government Schools in Career & Technical Education.  They also picked up a 2nd place finish award for Most Improved GPA in Government Schools (BGCSE – Category B:  101-500 student entries).
  • NEHS nabbed the 1st place award for Most Improved GPA in Government Schools (BGCSE – Category B:  101-500 student entries)
  • SWAAS received a 1st place award for Most Improved GPA in Government Schools (BJC – Category C:  1-100 student entries), and
  • Harbour Island All Age School (HIAAS) received a 2nd place award for Most Improved GPA in Government Schools (BJC – Category B:  101-500 student entries).
