The 10th grade class at Windermere High School exhibited their work and explained their research to both teachers and peers.
10th Grade students at Windermere High School (WHS), on Friday, November 21st, 2014, were given the opportunity to showcase weeks of research on a chosen topic at the first ever History Fair at the school.
Presentations and displays were prepared on a myriad of topics covered in the tenth grade History curriculum; from the ancient Central and South American Maya, and Inca civilizations, to the ‘closer to home’ histories of the Caribs and Lucayans. All students presented their research using poster displays, and some went further than others, with miniature scaled models to highlight their particular topic.

The Fair, which began at 9am and continued until 10:45am, saw the tenth grade students welcoming the entire student body as well as teachers throughout the morning to view and critique both their displays as well as their ability to present their research, in addition to their written reports. They were asked questions, one-on-one by their teachers and peers about their work, and had the opportunity to share what they had learned.
Shirlene Eileen, the History teacher at WHS, along with Dona Banks – English Language and Religious Knowledge teacher, coordinated the History Fair. The tenth graders were vying for the top three title positions of first, second, and third, with the opportunity as well to be noted as an honorable mention, as well as an award recognizing a student for excelling in a standout way in one area of their presented research.
According to Ms. Dona Banks, each grade level at the school during the 2014/2015 school year will be taking part in research Fairs, focused on different subject areas. In February 2015, grade eleven plans to host a Religious Knowledge Fair, grades nine and twelve are to take part in a Science Fair, and the younger grades plan to have an Art Fair in the new year.
“There is a lot going on for our students to show off their talents, and for them to excel academically”, commented Ms. Banks shortly before the Fair wrapped up.
