(Eleuthera, Bahamas) Seven Eleuthera students from three schools, were among approximately 200 students from throughout the country who were honoured on Thursday January 30th, 2014 at the Ministery of Education, Science & Technology’s Annual National Awards for the Bahamas Junior Certificate (BJC) and the Bahamas General Certificate of Secondary Education (BGCSE) Examinations for 2013. The prestigious event took place at 10am and was held at the Church of God Convention Centre in New Providence, and was broadcasted on national radio. Minister of Education, Science & Technology, Jerome Fitzgerald delivered the keynote address.

Philip Moss of North Eleuthera High School (NEHS) was awarded for having the best results from any of the schools in Eleuthera. Moss sat seven BJC examinations and had 7 A’s. He also was awarded for having the top grade nationally in General Science.

Safyha Bryan of Central Eleuthera High School (CEHS) sat six BJC examinations and earned 6 A’s. She also walked away with three top national results, receiving the highest “A” grade  in Mathematics, Health Science and Social Studies in the Bahamas.

Vernell Rolle of North Eleuthera High School (NEHS) and Dennison Underwood from Spanish Wells All Age School (SWAA) received honourable mention at the ceremony for their stellar achievements. Vernell sat seven BJC exminations and earned 6 A’s and 1 B. Dennison sat five BJC examinations and earned 5A’s.

Overall 112 Junior High students received honourable mention certificates for achieving 5 or more A’s in the national BJC examinations.

59 Senior High students from throughout the country received honourable mention certificates for achieving 5 or more A’s in the national BGCSE examinations but no students from the Eleuthera District of schools attained this achievement in 2013. However, an 11th grade student of CEHS, Delphine Carroll, took home the award for ‘Best BGCSE Results by Island’ for Eleuthera with her achievement of 4 A’s and 1 B in the 2013 examinations.

For the 2013 BGCSE examinations, two Eleuthera students received the highest national grade “A” result in a subject.  Brittany Ritch of SWAA got the top grade nationally in Keyboarding Skills and Elsie Joseph also of SWAA received the top national grade in Art & Design (Craft).

According to a Nassau Daily in an August  16, 2013 published article, Minister of Education, Science and Technology, Jerome Fitzgerald was quoted as saying the number of students who sat for BJC examinations in 2013 was 31,886, and 7,140 sat for the 2013 BGCSE examinations.
