For the ninth consecutive year, drivers of sport on Eleuthera brought together young athletes from across The Eleutheras for the annual Alvin Adderley Road Race on Friday, November 8th, 2013. In addition to coaches from the schools, veteran names like Mr. Crean, Mr. Butler and Mr. Ingraham were once again at the forefront, helping to make the event, successful yet again.
The Road Race, which is held each year in remembrance of former Eleuthera teacher, Mr. Alvin Adderley, who died as a result of cancer, and this year it was once again staged at the Bay Front Park in Governor’s Harbour. Historically the race had been run between Savannah Sound and Governor’s Harbour.
Scorching hot sunshine beamed down as the race got under way, after 10am, with ambulance, police and local health professionals on hand to lend assistance.
Five (5) Eleuthera Senior High Schools, its one (1) Junior High School and eleven (11) Primary Schools participated in the hotly contested relay event. In the Primary School Division, ten member teams competed in half mile legs passing on the baton to teammates at the designated spot within Bay Front Park. The High Schools competed in six divisions; under 20 boys, under 20 girls, under 17 boys, under 17 girls, under 15 boys and under 15 girls – also with ten member relay teams, but a longer leg distance of 1 mile, which took each competitor from Bay Front Park, south to the forked junction at Governor’s Harbour’s southern approach, then back, running north along the Queen’s Highway to Bay Front Park’s entrance.
The family of Mr. Adderley were honoured in a short ceremony just prior to race time, with a recollection of his contribution to education in Eleuthera and a token gift presented to his wife.
Results at this time remain unpublished as they are Unofficial. Official Results will be released after a panel of three judges reviews all details of the day’s competition. Following this release, medals and trophies will be awarded to students at participating schools.
