NASSAU, The Bahamas – The National Emergency Management Agency, NEMA, is assisting with the coordination of an assessment exercise being conducted by the Department of Social Services in the aftermath of the fire, which occurred in a Haitian Village off Joe Farrington Road on Monday, July 22, 201

First Assistant Secretary at NEMA, Chrystal Glinton said the assessment exercise is to also determine the extent of destruction to homes and how many individuals are in need of assistance.

On Tuesday the team comprising personnel from NEMA, Department of Social Services and the Bahamas Red Cross walked through the area, to conduct the initial assessment exercise.

Out of the estimated 400 persons living in that community, 121 are displaced. Of that number, 36 are under the age of 17.  At least 30 homes were totally destroyed.

The Great Commission Ministries are providing hot meals for the victims. The Salvation Army will provide clothing and non-perishable items, the Department of Social Services, accommodations for the women and children and the Bahamas Red Cross donated bedding and toiletries.

Assessments are ongoing.
