Student body of Preston H. Albury High School in Rock Sound, South Eleuthera,  like their peers around the country were treated to a special assembly in honour of the patron of their school.

Schools across the island of Eleuthera, and across the Bahamian archipelago celebrated special assemblies on Tuesday, April 16th, 2013, in honour of each school’s patron, a past principal or past teacher who contributed significantly to the history of each school, as part of the country’s 40th anniversary activities in the run up to this year’s independence celebrations.

The five public high schools in the Eleuthera district each celebrated a number of different patrons, representing community stalwarts, past principals, and teachers.

In Spanish Wells at the All Age School, students were told about the life and accomplishments of Mr. Samuel Guy Pinder, a former principal, as well as a District Education Officer for Eleuthera from 1958 to 1959.

Harbour Island All Age, also highlighted the life and contributions of a former principal at the school, Mr. Falcon Major.

North Eleuthera High School shone the spotlight on Mrs. Emerald Cash, a former teacher who taught at the school for thirty one (31) years from 1968 until her retirement in 1999 – then continued to give to her community through leadership in a number of initiatives.

Central Eleuthera High School, located in the heart of the Eleuthera District, highlighted the four ‘founding fathers’ of the institution; Rev. Philip Bethel, Mr. Joshua Culmer, Mr. Lawrence Griffin and Mr. Austin Knowles Sr., who came together to provide the acreage on which the school resides.

Preston H. Albury High School, in Rock Sound, South Eleuthera, celebrated their school’s patron, for which the school is now named.  Mr. Albury, who was a native of Governor’s Harbour, represented the constituency of South Eleuthera as an elected member of parliament in 1967.  He also went on to hold the chairmanship of the Bahamas Electricity Corporation from 1971 to 1974, and then the private sector post of president and chief operating officer of GAC Eleuthera Limited – the developers of Cape Eleuthera.

He was represented by his daughter Nora Albury at the special assembly, who proudly presented a reflection of the life of Mr. Albury to the students, staff and community guests at the morning event.
