(Eleuthera, Bahamas) On March 22, 2013, Exceptional Education Outreach (EEO), a special education and literacy development project in Eleuthera and Harbour Island, held its first annual garden tour on Windermere Island.  Five spectacular properties were showcased for a crowd of 45 garden lovers.

The garden tour was organized by Gretchen Jackson, who is a long time resident of Windermere Island, and four other homeowners on the island opened their properties for the tour.  Attendees were able to wander through exquisite blossoms of bougainvillea, lush palm tree groves, patterned poolside beds, and wonderfully sculpted walkways.  A highlight of the tour included a garden retreat that truly reflected Eleuthera’s essence, including a secluded outdoor bath and shower made of driftwood and walls arranged with local stone and topped with driftwood branches.

The tour concluded at the Jackson residence where guests enjoyed light fare and music by the Rum Runners.  Several pieces of artwork by Stephen Scott Young and Daniel Caldwell were displayed for sale, with all proceeds going to EEO.  Unique EEO batik t-shirts were also debuted and are still available in all sizes.  To order yours, contact eeobahamas.org or visit The Blue Rooster or the Valentine’s Dive Shop on Harbour Island to purchase one.

“The garden tour was a great way to introduce EEO to new communities in Central and South Eleuthera,” said EEO Founder and Director Lang Hudepohl.  “EEO has expanded to the southern part of the island in recent years and we are thrilled to have a center operating in Tarpum Bay that serves 23 children. This was made possible by a great new partnership with One Eleuthera and Windermere Island Foundation and Tarpum Bay Primary School.  The garden tour is another great example of the generosity and care the people of Windermere Island have for local school children.  We are grateful for all of the support.”
