Notice Ref: TRANSITIONING FROM ASR 8/ARTS TO ASR 12/MSSR RADAR AND AIRCON AIR TRAFFIC MANAGEMENT SYSTEMS

The Bahamas Air Navigation Services Department informs the general public and the aviation community, that due to the recent “go live” of its new ASR 12 /MSSR Radar and Aircon Air Traffic Management Systems at the Lynden Pindling International Airport, members of the flying community who require air traffic services, and the general public are advised that some travel delays will be experienced, especially during the normally high traffic volume holiday periods of Thanksgiving, Christmas and the New Year.

Pilots filing flight plans are advised that until further notice the following amendments have been made to the published procedures:

FOR DEPARTURES FROM NASSAU (MYNN):

  • A minimum of 45 minutes notice prior to the Estimated Time of Departure (ETD) is required for all domestic Flight Plans, IFR or VFR;
  • A minimum of 90 minutes notice prior to the Estimated Time of Departure (ETD) is required for all International Flight Plans, IFR or VFR, whether or not bound for the Continental United States;
  • Round-trip Flight plans should be filed simultaneously.

NOTE: It is recommended that aircraft (charter or private) departing between 6:00 a.m. local time and 7:00 a.m. local time, file the flight plans the evening prior to avoid delay.

FOR ARRIVALS INTO NASSAU (MYNN)

Pilots who do not have a Flight Plan on file are to remain outside of twenty-five (25) nautical miles, contact Nassau Radio 128.0, file the flight plan, and then standby on the frequency until instructed to contact Nassau Approach Control. Aircraft violating this procedure will be instructed to return to 25NM until the service can be provided.

ENROUTE TRAFFIC

Pilots who will be operating through the Nassau CTA/FIR MUST have a flight plan on file prior to 25NM.

FLOW CONTROL

Flow control measures will be implemented as necessary to avoid airspace congestion and to maintain a safe operational environment. Appropriate notices will be placed on the ATIS and the Nassau Airport Development Company will be notified.

The Bahamas Air Navigation Services Department apologizes for any inconvenience caused as a result of these amended requirements, as it moves to ensure the safety of the travelling public during these periods.
